I am a west coast girl who grew up with a host of family and friends at my disposal. I am love, I am grace, I am flawed. I am courageous, adventurous and complicated. I cringe at the thought of killing roaches because they disgust me! I love laughing out loud and when I'm feeling my best; I can be found enjoying food and drinks with friends or on a hiking trail soaking up the sun. When I'm feeling down, I retreat to my journal or a pick-me-up convo with a treasured family or friend. I believe each day brings another puzzle piece of who I am. Life is about evolving & becoming a better you. So, who am I? I am a evolving being.

The Million Mustache March

Another intern, John Rose, and I decided to go and report on the Million Mustache March last Sunday. What followed was, by far, one of the funniest and most exciting experiences we’ve ever had. I wrote and small piece on the march for the NPR Intern Edition blog, check it out here.

*A huge thanks goes to John for taking some incredible photographs.

Enjoy! -Savy

NO JUSTICE………………….NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO PEACE!!! We want Justice for the senseless death of Trayvon Martin!!!!!!!!

theatlantic:

Scenes from the ‘Million Hoodie March’ for Trayvon Martin

The family of Trayvon Martin joined thousands of demonstrators, who teamed up with Occupy Wall Street, to march across New York City last night to protest the shooting death of the Florida teenager. The “Million Hoodie March,” as it was dubbed, was organized to show support for the Martin family and call for the arrest of the George Zimmerman, the man who shot and killed Martin last month, but has not been charged after claiming self-defense. Martin’s parents spoke to crowd to thank them for their support and continue to push for chages to be filed against Zimmerman. Martin’s mother Sabrina Fulton told the gathered protesters that “My son is your son.”

After the formal demonstration ended, the protest — buoyed in part by the Occupy Wall Street supporters angry over recent clashes with the NYPD — evolved into a general anti-police rally. Much of the anger surrounding the Martin case has shifted from the shooter to the Sanford, Florida, police department that seems to have let him off the hook.

The protesters marched from Union Square to Times Square and back, where they encountered a massive police prescence, with lines of NYPD officers and barricades blocking off most of the park. Despite the ominous and aggresives stances from both the police and the protesters, the night ended calmly with no major confrontations.

Fit people’s food beliefsI read a book called “The Body fat Solution” by Tom Venuto this weekend. Here is a passage that I found interesting: it deals with our beliefs about food and how they affect our behavior and decisions. (The photo on the left has nothing to do with the book, I just placed it here because I think it’s cute :)
“When it comes to food, I’ve discovered that fit, lean, and healthy people have a unique set of beliefs about food and a distinct set of metaphors they use to describe food and what food is for. The ones I’ve heard most often include:
Food is fuel.
Food is the best medicine.
Food is construction material for the body.
Food stokes the fire of metabolism.
Fruit is nature’s candy.
Lean protein is the lean muscle builder.
High-fiber foods are nature’s Roto-Rooter.
I’ve never met anyone who talked about food with this type of language exclusively, who had a challenge with inappropriate eating or excess body fat. Think about that. When you look at it this way, food is no longer the problem, food is the solution and you become driven to eat the right foods rather than avoid food.”
